Frequently Asked Questions

What are the signs that my child may need a speech and/or language evaluation?

Each communication disorder presents with different signs that may warrant the intervention of a speech-language pathologist. Please click here to read about how to identify some signs. Also, trust your gut! You are the caregiver and if you think something isn’t right, it’s best to NOT wait and see. Sometimes a primary care physician will refer your child if they are noticing speech and/or language concerns.

Does Nurtured Communication take insurance? What if I do not have the insurance listed below?

Nurtured Communication is credentialed with Highmark Delaware and Highmark Delaware Health Options. If your family does not have this insurance, we accept private pay for our services.

What is private pay?

Private pay is most commonly known as paying “out-of-pocket.” Nurtured Communication accepts cash, credit card, Health Savings Account (HSA), and Flexible Spending Account (FSA) payments. As a private pay client, you have the right to cost transparency and protection from surprise billing. Please click here for more information.

What will happen during the evaluation?

An evaluation usually takes about 60-90 minutes. As the caregiver, you can expect to answer questions. Your child will do different tasks that may include but not limited to: pointing to pictures, labeling pictures, engaging in daily routines, engaging in conversation, and playing. Once the evaluation is complete, we will discuss some general findings about your child’s speech and language skills. A comprehensive report will be typed up and sent to you within 14-21 business days. The report will include more “formal” scores and in-depth explanations about your child’s strengths and areas of needed support. We will schedule treatment/coaching sessions dependent upon the evaluation results. Evaluation findings will also be reviewed with you and your family during the first session. Payment is due on the day of service.

What will happen during treatment?

Nurtured Communication strives to make treatment naturalistic and functional as possible. Pediatric therapy can often look “just like play.” Speech-language pathologist are trained to target different skills in ways that seem normal and fun to the child. Treatment sessions can last 30-45 minutes and will vary depending on the child’s attention level, motivation, clinical judgement and other factors. Data will also be taken to track progress over time. Payment is due on the day of service.

Where is Nurtured Communication located?

Nurtured Communication is currently a “mobile” practice and provides services in your child’s daycare, private school, at home or virtually.
